Apart from this traditional view it is believed that originally the land was known as "Tuipra" meaning a land adjoining the water. It is fact that in days of yore the boundaries of Tripura was extended up to the Bay of Bengal when its rulers held sway from Garo hills to Arakan.
Tripura is largely a Bengali community, inspite of the 19 Scheduled Tribes that form a major chunk of the population. Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism and Christianity are the main religions followed in Tripura. Many famous ancient Hindu temples are located in the state. Tripura Sundri Temple, Bhubneswari Temple, Gunabati Temples, Durga Temple, Jagannath Temple, Vishnu Temple, Mahadev Temple, Unakoti etc. are some of the holiest temples.
