Guwahati is a historical place and several ancient monuments and structures, ancient Hindu temples and places of tourist attractions are located in and around Guwahati. Guwahati - said to be the legendary Pragjyotishpur or City of Eastern Light - is the gateway to northeastern India . The name is a combination of two words: Guwa meaning areca nut and Hat meaning market. Guwahati is the commercial nerve center of the Northeast.
Tezpur
Tezpur town is headquarter of Sonitpur district in Assam and is situated on the north bank of river Brahmaputra . Ancient Tezpur called Sonitpur in olden days is city of mythology, legend and past history. According to mythologies the ancient Sonitpur was the capital of the kingdom of Banasur where fierce battle was fought between Banasur and Lord Krishna.
Tezpur is also famous for its freedom fighters in 1942, against British rule. Tezpur have a unique place in Assam where Assamese art and culture flourished. This is the center of the Indian tea industry.
Other architectural remains include that of Agnigarh, Bamuni Hills, Bhairavi and Mahabhairab temples and the twin tanks of Bar Pukhuri and Padum Pukhuri. |
