Earlier Mumbai was Bombay , but with the change of all technologies it has also turned to Mumbai. Mumbai derives its name from the local deity Mumba Devi, whose temple is still there. The city, which was earlier, the land of Kolis , came under the Portuguese rule in 1534.

Pune (Poona)
Pune is one of the historical cities of India with a glorious past, an innovative present and a promising future. The Pune Municipal Corporation administers the city. Its boundaries extend over four hundred square kilometers and it has a population of close to four million. Thus, Pune city has been developed into a Pune metropolitan area, just equal in area to that of Greater Mumbai. It is located 192 km (by rail) and 160 km (by road) from Mumbai and is 559 meters above the mean sea level. Base of the Great Maratha Emperor, Chhatrapati Shivaji and the Peshwas, the city has been a cultural capital of Maharashtra for centuries. Pune is considered as the Oxford of India - with its many educational and research institutions apart from other institutions for sports, yoga, ayurveda, culture and social services.
Aurangabad (Sambhajinagar)
Aurangabad is famous for its popular caves of Ajanta and Ellora. This city was founded in 1610, on the site of a village, Khirki by Malik Ambar - the Prime Minister of Murtaza Nizam Shah II. Aurangabad has always been a prominent region on the Deccan Plateau. Having been inhabited since the Stone Age, it has a long artistic and cultural history - to which several dynasties have made major contributions over the years.
Nagpur
Nagpur is practically at geographical center of India in fact the zero milestone of India is in this city. This city lies on the bank of the river Nag and named after the name of the river. Nagpur district is located between 21*45 N to 20*30 N and 78*15 E to 79*45 E, which essentially indicates that Nagpur district, is located in the Deccan Plateau. The adjoining districts are Bhandara on the east; Chandrapur on the south, Amravati and Wardha on the west and in the north shares the boundary with Madhya Pradesh. Nagpur is the orange growing capital of India . The region in & around the city is also the chief centre for production of cotton.
Nashik
Nashik stands on the bank of Godavari River , one of the holiest rivers of the Deccan . Like Ujjain , this one is one of the sites for the triennial Kumbh mela which comes here once in every 12 years. The riverbanks are lined with steps above which stand many temples & shrines. A delightful town, usually bustling with fervent crowds, Nasik is a classic melange of the past and the present.
