The city, as the legend goes, has derived its name from Leishyllong, the Superpower or God, who is said to be dwelling on the Shillong Peak over-looking the city. It is the capital of Meghalaya. It can also be described as the " Scotland of the East". because of its striking similarity with that of the Scottish highlands and has been attracting indigenous and foreign tourists for decades.
Shillong is situated at a height of 5,000 feet above sea level on a plateau of hill. Shillong is one of the premier hill station of the country having a cool climate throughout the year. Shillong has an abundance of natural scenic beauty, connected by motrable roads with the rest of the country through Assam .
Tura
Tura, the headquarters of the Garo hills district, has a pleasant climate and picturesque location. However, the journey is worthwhile only for an extended day. The Tura peak requires 5 km of hiking cum rock climbing with the reward being a glorious view of the sunset. Tura and the surrounding area also provides a window to the ethnic lifestyles of the Garo people.
Jowai
Jowai is situated in the district of the Jaintias.It is located at a distance of 65 km from Shillong. It is the gateway to Nartiang, a delightful village further north that has a bizarre collection of druid stones. Today it is an interesting park but a decade ago, human sacrifices were carried out. Set in a region of green hills and plateaus with crystal clear streams, beautiful lakes and waterfalls, the area also has enchanting caves and caverns. Originally known as the land of twelve tribal chiefs, the area is a good place to pick up tribal handicrafts.The most dominating piece rising up to the sky with red spots on the gray granite carries the story of a boy who was tricked into a trap, offering his life to please the gods. Take a walk through the charming village. There is a monument dedicated to the first freedom fighter hanged by the British in 1862. |
